AldermanCeremony_05Surrey Heath Borough Council has bestowed one of the highest honours in its gift in conferring two former borough councillors as Honorary Aldermen for their outstanding service and dedication to Surrey Heath.

Keith Bush and Alan Whittart were conferred with the title of Honorary Alderman at an extraordinary full council meeting at Surrey Heath House, Camberley on Thursday 23 July 2015.

Councillor Moira Gibson, Leader of the council said: “With nearly 40 years of service between them, both Keith and Alan have contributed greatly to the work of the Council through their commitment, enthusiasm and vast experience, undertaking the various roles of committee members as well as both having served in the highest office of Mayor of Surrey Heath.”

“They have served the Council and people of Surrey Heath with enormous dedication and the Council agreed that they each be honoured with the title of Honorary Alderman.”

Keith Bush was first elected as borough councillor in 1999 representing West End ward, and served in numerous roles, particularly as Mayor of Surrey Heath in 2006/07, Deputy Mayor in 2005/06 and as a member of the Executive holding various portfolios including Leisure, Corporate, Planning and Regulatory.

Alan Whittart has served as the borough councillor for Frimley Green Ward since 1993 and as well as holding the office of Mayor of Surrey Heath in 2008/09 was Deputy Mayor 2007/08 and the council’s representative on numerous external groups including the Surrey Heath Sports Council from 1998 to 2015 and the Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership between 2005 and 2015.

At the ceremony the newly conferred Honorary Aldermen were presented with a special scroll and bespoke pendant badge of office by the current Mayor of Surrey Heath, Councillor Joanne Potter.
